Bristol Zoo Gardens is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Approved Centre for Zoological Medicine. Established in 1999, the on-site veterinary department deals with over 10,000 animals of more than 500 species resident at Bristol Zoo Gardens. The vet department currently consists of the Head of Veterinary Services Michelle Barrows, two part-time staff vets – Rowena Killick and Richard Saunders, Adam Naylor training scholar and two part-time nurses – Head veterinary nurse Kellie Wyatt and veterinary nurse Teresa Horspool.
Zoo veterinary work is varied ranging from ‘hands-on’ clinical work and post mortem exams to record keeping and collating data. Volunteers are expected to assist with all areas.
