13 huge animatronic bugs have just crawled their way into Bristol Zoo as preparations get underway for the Zoo’s Big Bug exhibition.
The new residents include some of the world’s most popular species, such as the 7-spot ladybird, Mexican red kneed tarantula, firefly and the red tailed bumble bee, all of which will be brought to life using state-of-the-art technology and animatronics.
The Big Bugs arrived at the Zoo in giant crates transported all the way from Texas, USA.
Over the coming 10 days, the new residents will be placed around the Zoo and brought to life using mechanical technology and animatronics.
The adventure begins on Saturday 28 March and visitors can see the Big Bugs every day until Sunday 6 September 2015. This free exhibition will offer budding bug rangers, old and young, the chance to get up-close to amazing, moving, hissing, and even water-spraying bugs.
Owain Cassidy, Bristol Zoo’s Head of Marketing and Development said: “We are very excited to unveil our giant, life-like bugs. We are sure that the Big Bugs will prove just as popular as the giant animatronic dinosaurs we displayed in 2013 following their popularity in 2012.”
He added: “As well as being fantastic fun, this exhibition also presents a great opportunity to tell our guests more about the creepy crawlies we all know and love, in an interactive and exciting way.”
In celebration of its new residents, Bristol Zoo will be hosting a number of fun, bug-related activities on site, including games in the Zoo’s new Bug Hub.
Bristol Zoo Gardens is a conservation and education charity and relies on the generous support of the public not only to fund its important work in the zoo, but also its vital conservation and research projects spanning five continents.
