The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition

Competition Rules and Guidance

  1. The opening date for receipt of entries is 00:00:01 BST 11 May 2022.
  2. The closing date for receipt of entries is 23:59:59 BST 30 June 2022.
  3. The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition is open to all published and unpublished writers. There is no geographical restriction on entry – The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition is open to everyone, whether they are based in the UK or outside the UK. Entries can be made online or by post.  All entries must be in English. Online entries should be submitted via the online entry facility, usually in Word document, pdf or equivalent. Postal entries will only be accepted as printed typescripts. There are no specific formatting requirements: font type, font size, line spacing etc. Writers may format their work in the way they feel is most appropriate – we do not specify any particular format for submissions.   4. There are six categories:

  1. Entrants for the 18 and over category must be 18 years old or over on the closing date, 30 June 2022.
  2. Entrants for the 12-17 category must be 17 years old or under and 12 years old or above on the closing date, 30 June 2022.
  3. Entrants for the 11 and under category must be 11 years old or under on the closing date, 30 June 2022.
  4. Entries will be read and judged anonymously; entrants’ names and contact details should only appear on the entry form and not anywhere on their stories/manuscripts. The stories/manuscripts must be free of all personal information about the author.
  5. The maximum length of submissions is 500 words for short story submissions, and 300 words for poem submissions for both age categories. These limits do not include title. There is no minimum length. Stories and poems must be on the theme of ‘Memories of the past and/or aspirations of the future of Bristol Zoological Society’.
  6. Entrants may enter as many stories or poems as they like, free of charge. Each postal submission must be accompanied by a signed entry form confirming an entrant has read the rules of The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition and accepts the rules of the competition. Entries will not be returned. Please keep a copy. No corrections or alterations can be made after receipt of an entry.
  7. Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been previously published, in print or online (including self-published, eBook, magazines, journals, websites, blogs, social network sites), or broadcast or won a prize in another writing competition on or before 31 August 2022. Any entry found to have been plagiarised will be disqualified. Simultaneous submissions are welcome but please let us know as soon as possible if a story is to be published elsewhere, in print or online (including self-published, eBook, magazines, journals, websites, blogs, social network sites), or broadcast or has won a prize in another writing competition on or before 31 August 2022.
  8. If entrants require acknowledgement of receipt of a postal entry they must enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. Online entries will be acknowledged by email. If an entrant does not receive an email acknowledgement for an online entry they are very welcome to contact Bristol Zoological Society to confirm their entry has been received. Please contact us via email: competition@bristolzoo.org.uk
  9. Entries will be read by our public programme team. They will select a longlist of stories and poems from each age category for the judging panel. The judging panel will select a shortlist of stories and poems from each age category, and the top 3 prize winning stories and poems from each age category for The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition. The judges’ decision is final and no individual correspondence will be entered into. Judges or readers will not comment on individual stories or give feedback on individual stories.
  10. The 2022 judging panel is: Caleb Parkin, Dr. Samantha Walton, and Pey Oh.
  11. All entrants agree to have their work published in both print and eBook formats, should they be the author of one of the stories or poems that are shortlisted The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition. Authors will retain worldwide copyright on their work (including film and dramatic rights) but Bristol Zoological Society has first publication rights to publish any of the shortlisted stories for The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition. Each of the shortlisted stories must never have been previously published, in print or online (including self-published, eBook, magazines, journals, websites, blogs, social network sites), or broadcast or won a prize in another writing competition on or before 31 August 2022. Please email Bristol Zoological Society on competition@bristolzoo.org.uk if clarification of this is needed or if the author wishes to have permission to publish their work first.
  12. Prizes for 2022 competition are as follows:

    2. Second prize poem, aged 18 and over – A goodie bag (worth £50 RRP)
    3. Third prize poem, aged 18 and over – A goodie bag (worth £25 RRP)
    4. First prize story, aged 18 and over – Have your piece featured in the new Bristol Zoo and the Clifton Conservation Hub, a family Admission ticket to the Wild Place Project, and a goodie bag (worth £50 RRP)

  13. All prizes will be awarded at The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition Awards Event on 20/08/2022 and will be sent to any of the writers who are unable to attend the awards ceremony. Prizes are not dependent on winners attending the awards ceremony.
  14. Entrants will not be contacted individually about the competition results unless they are selected for the shortlist. The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition longlist and shortlist will be announced on the Bristol Zoo website. The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition longlist and shortlist of stories and poems will be posted on the Bristol Zoo website after the awards event. The top 3 prize winners in each category of The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition will be displayed on the website within one week after the awards ceremony.
  15. Any entrant wishing to withdraw a story or poem from the competition must do so before the closing date and time of 23:59:59 BST 30 June 2022.
  16. Entry implies an acceptance of all The Zoo and You, Poetry and Story Competition. Entries that fail to comply with the entry rules and requirements may be disqualified.
