Keeper Volunteer schemes

There are five Keeper Volunteer roles so you’ll need to pick which one(s) you are interested in. These roles are:

  • Volunteer Aquarium Keeper (16 years +)
  • Volunteer Bug World Keeper (16 years +)
  • Volunteer Reptile & Amphibian Keeper (16 years +)
  • Volunteer Birds Keeper (16 years +)
  • Volunteer Mammals Keeper (18 years +)

Why do we have Keeper Volunteers and what do they do?

Having volunteer support means we are able to do additional, but important, tasks such as more behaviour observation and creating more new enrichments.
Keeper Volunteers provide valuable support to our Animal Department.  Volunteering alongside staff, our volunteers help with a variety of tasks such as cleaning, food preparation and enrichment.

Who are we looking for?

  • People who enjoy being part of a team.
  • A willingness to learn and to keep up to date.
  • Happy being outside in all the weather that Bristol can throw at you, or volunteering in hot humid animal enclosures.
  • Good levels of physical fitness- you will be on your feet the majority of the day and some tasks will require stamina.
  • Reliability and regular attendance.  We would like Volunteers to attend one week day a week from 8am – 5pm.

What’s in it for you?

By becoming a Keeper Volunteer you can…

  • Gain valuable animal husbandry experience to enhance your CV.
  • Do something completely different in your spare time.
  • Meet new people.

"The past year volunteering with the keepers has been one of the best things I've ever done. Not only have I been able to learn a whole variety of husbandry skills it has encouraged me to pursue a career working with nature and animals. I was successful in acquiring the volunteering post when I wasn't sure what or where I wanted to go with my life and being able to volunteer with such an inspirational team of keepers, as well as the many different species, has opened my eyes to the many possibilities I have to  choose from.”
– Adam Llewellyn - Keeper Volunteer.
